Gang Mills Area History

Gang Mills is in located in the town of Erwin, southwest of Corning.

During the mid 1800s, it was the site of gang-saw mills to cut lumber.

Isaac Grey and two lawyers built the first sawmill on land that is now "Gang Mills" In 1846 the mill was rebuilt, enlarged, steam was added to hydraulic power, new machinery and buildings. In 1846 the mill was rebuilt, enlarged, steam was added to hydraulic power, new machinery and buildings. This area then became the most extensive lumber establishment in town, county or state.

The history and uses of the Gang Mills Yard as I know it: 1. The yard was built in 1951. Gang Mills also fielded locals down the branch to Mansfield and Blossberg until Agnes destroyed the branch in 1972. The traffic apparently diminished over time, as one of the EL books in my collection shows the local powered by an SW8 during the late '60s. Gang Mills in 2021 is mostly residentual with some businesses as well as a large plant by Corning Glass at Sullivan Park Plant as well as a lot of undeveloped forest area.
