C-PP yearbook team wins major honors -- again

For the third year in a row, Tesserae, the student-edited yearbook at Corning-Painted Post High School, won the prestigious Pacemaker award from the National Scholastic Press Association in a virtual awards ceremony held April 17.
Tesserae was the only Pacemaker honoree in New York, and with the win, the publication extended a streak of double honors that goes back to its 2017 edition: Tesserae has won the Pacemaker and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Gold Crown in each of the past three years, and distinguishes itself as the only high school yearbook in the nation with an active three-year streak for both honors. Additionally, the 2019 publication won first place Best in Show honors for yearbooks 280-232 pages in length during the ceremony. The yearbook’s staff, editors and adviser gathered via Google Meet to watch the virtual ceremony, “NSPA Live from Minneapolis,” which replaced awards ceremonies that were scheduled for the National High School Journalism Convention in Nashville, Tenn., which was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Tesserae staff comprises 48 student journalists, including designers, photographers, reporters, videographers and a business staff, and is co-advised by C-PPHS teachers Mike Simons and Katie Paulison-Harris. The 2019 edition was co-edited by 2019 graduates Lauren Thomas and Kelly Hoyt and current senior and co-Editor-in-Chief Kristin Hauptman. The C-PPHS yearbook staff publishes free from any administrative oversight; student editors make all content decisions, which is one reason for the publication’s success, according to Perry.
