Arkport School History

They had an excellent school {probably small}. In 1894 the village, with some adjacent territory, was formed into a Union Free School district, superseding the old system formerly in operation. The members of the Board of Education are L. C. Healy, president, and N. O. Wheeler, Hiram Ellis, A. A. Sewell, Henry Colgrove, and Charles Lawrence. The school building was of brick and frame, substantially built, and was regarded as one of the best rural schools of the county. Three teachers were employed.

Fifty years ago, in the 1930’s, the Arkport Central School District was formed, relegating the Arkport Union School, its predecessors, and some rural districts, to posterity. It was not without some bitterness that this decision was reached. The battle lines had been squarely drawn for several years prior to the actual vote. Both the ”Traditionalists” and the ”Progressives,” as the two sides could be called, had marshaled their most telling arguments to present to the voters through public meetings and the press. With each faction sincerely believing its arguments to be the right ones, feelings became quite heated at times, culminating in a vote FOR centralization at a huge meeting held at the Union High School on August 6, 1935. The New York State Department of Education originally approved a centralized district consisting of five districts.
